SCOPE

UW's Confined Space Program encompases all confined spaces under UW control. It includes UW's buildings, grounds and off-campus sites (including field work).

Purpose

This program covers any UW employee or student whose duties require entry and work within confined spaces at the University.  Contractors and subcontractors entering confined spaces at the University must also abide by the procedures established by this program (see Confined Spaces - Co-ordination Document).

Program

UW's Confined Space Program consists of the following elements;

  1. Recognition
  2. Hazard assessment
  3. Space specific plan
  4. Training, and
  5. Entry Permit

 

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS ANYONE TO ENTER A CONFINED SPACE UNDER UW CONTROL WITHOUT ADHERING TO UW's CONFINED SPACE PROGRAM

Definition (Occupational Health and Safety Act)

"confined space" means a fully or partially enclosed space,

  1. that is not both designed and constructed for continuous human occupancy, and
  2. in which atmospheric hazards may occur because of its construction, location or contents or because of work that is done in it
