Radiation

The Radiation Safety Program establishes a set of requirements for those working with radioactive materials and devices at the University of Waterloo.

Permits

Permits are required prior to completing any radioactive work on campus. To request a permit after reviewing the Radiation Safety Program complete the Application for Permit Form and email to radiation@uwaterloo.ca to start the permitting process.


Training

Those working with radiation at the University must complete the following:

  1.  An online training module that outlines the basic principles of working safely with radioactive materials and devices. Choose the online module based on the source you are working with. If you are unsure which to take, discuss with you supervisor. 
    1. Working With Radiation - Open Sources (SO2030-O)
    2. Working With Radiation - Sealed Sources (SO2030-S)
  2. Basic practical radiation safety training (provided by the Safety Office)
    • Contact the Safety Office to book your one-on-one training session after completing Working With Radiation (SO2030).
  3. Laboratory specific practical radiation safety training (provided by the principal investigator)

    • Document training using the Site Specific Training Form

Permit Holders and their lab managers may confirm their approved workers on the Permit Sharepoint.
