Responsibilities for Laboratory Safety

Legislation and Policies

Every UW faculty member, staff member and student is responsible for acting in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and UW Policy 34 to protect the health, safety and environment of any laboratory worker under their direction.

The specific responsibilities of supervisors and workers are detailed on the following pages:

Inspections

Each department must ensure that a regular Inspection Program is in place to ensure that safety measures are in place and that safe work procedures are being followed.

Lab Decommissioning

Lab Decommissioning is the responsibility of the principal investigator. Final inspection and department approval must be given before release of a decommissioned lab.
